Cell Phone Battery Life
Jun/090

Cell phones are so mainstream these days that we don’t even ask people anymore if they have a cell phone, its just expected. Its so common to have a cell phone that it often feels like the end of the world when we forget our phones or when they run out of battery. Often we get asked, “How long does a cell phone battery last?” We would like to answer this question.
Cellular phone batteries have changed throughout the years. Phones first used nickel cadmium (Nacl) type batteries that needed to be fully discharged and then recharged every time the batter was charged. After this type of batter came the Nickel Metal Hydrid (NiMH) which also had to be fully discharged and recharged. The latest and newest batteries in today’s cell phones are the Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries which are a bit more expensive than the other batteries of the past. The nice thing about the Lithium Ion battery is that they do not have to be discharged and recharged. The newer batteries are also much more lightweight.
To understand how long a phone battery will last we first have to clarify what actually batter capacity means. The storage capacity of a battery is described by the talktime and standby time of the cellular phone. This is converted to milli-amp hours (mAh). What most people don’t know is that battery life is mostly determined by how the user of the cell phone treats the phone.
Many people leave their phone plugged into their charger all night which over charges the battery. Over charging the batter will shorten its life as it only needs 3-4 hours to fully charge. Also if you have your phone set on vibrate this will use up most of your battery power and reduce your talk and standby time. Another thing that kills batteries is having the back light timer on for a long time. Coverage areas can also affect your battery life. When your phone is in digital mode it has 100-200 hours of standby time. When you are in an analog area your phone only has 30-50 hours of standby time. If you are in an anolog area switch off your phone to conserve battery life so you could make an important phone call when the time arises.
Cell phone batteries usually have a long life and require little maintanance. There are however a few tips we will give you on the small maintanance you can do for a batter. Make sure to turn off the phone before you remove your battery as this is good for the battery. Also do not subject your phone to extreme temperatures as this can effect the batter. General life of a cell phone battery is 300 cycles which is about 2-3 years. If you take good care of your cell phone it could last even longer than that!
